How to stay anonymous online
Total anonymity is hard. Being a lot harder to track is easy. These are the moves that matter most.
Anonymity isn't one tool. It's a set of habits that stop different parts of your life from linking up.
1. Separate your identities
Don't use the same email, username or phone number everywhere. One slip, and everything connected to it connects to you. Use different identities for different parts of your life.
2. Pick services that ask for less
The safest data is data nobody has. Prefer apps that work without an email or phone number. For example, LateLune needs neither.
3. Use private email when you must use email
Encrypted providers and alias services stop your real address from spreading. See private email providers.
4. Hide your connection
A trustworthy VPN hides your IP from websites. Tor goes further and hides it from everyone, including the VPN company that would otherwise see everything.
5. Pay privately
Cards link purchases to your name. Use cash offline and Monero online.
6. Mind your metadata
Photos carry location data. Writing style, active hours and time zones give people away. See metadata explained.
7. Don't overshare
Most people who get unmasked do it themselves: a real name in a profile, a selfie, a detail about their city or job.
FAQ
Is a VPN enough?
It hides your IP from websites, but the VPN sees your traffic. Tor is stronger.
Can I be 100% anonymous?
Hard to guarantee. But you can make tracking you far more difficult than it's worth.
